Mary Patricia Croak passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, at the age of 96. She shared enduring memories, humor and love through her final days.
Born in Pendleton, Oregon, Mary—or “Mary Pat” to many—was the eldest of ten children born to Clarence and Eileen Brown. She grew up in Eugene and began her lifelong commitment to education at Marylhurst College in Lake Oswego, later adding to her teaching credentials at Cal State Hayward.
Mary met her future husband and life partner, Francis Croak, during a big band dance on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. They married and made their home in the Bay Area, spending the past 65 years in San Leandro, where they raised their five children. Once her children reached school age, Mary returned to the classroom, sharing her warmth and patience as a teacher in the San Lorenzo and San Leandro school districts.
Mary is survived by her five children, Kathy, Patrick, Kevin, Maureen and Shannon, her eight grandchildren, one great grandchild and beloved in-laws. She also leaves behind her siblings Kathy, Patrick and Marilyn along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and cherished friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, her parents Clarence and Eileen and siblings Jerry, Dorothy, Joanne, Betty, Jim, and Dan.
A woman of deep faith, Mary was a devoted member of the Church of the Assumption community. She lived her Catholic faith quietly and genuinely, with humility, kindness, and a generous heart. She was especially proud of her more than two decades teaching CCD to elementary students and her many years serving as a Communion minister to the homebound.
Private family services will be held. Remembrances may be made to the Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice.
